Is A Resin Driveway Cheaper Than Paving

Charlie Clark • November 28, 2023

For homeowners looking to improve the appearance and curb appeal of their property, one of the most important elements is the driveway. Not only does it serve a functional purpose, but it also provides amazing visual appeal. Back in the day, block paving was the way – it is what everyone chose for their driveway. However, as block pavers became renowned for their poor anti-weed systems, resin driveways have slowly started to take over. We are proud to provide both block paving and resin driveways for the cities of Torquay and Paignton, but let's get to the real question: which one is cheaper, and how can you get the best value for money?

1. Installation Cost

The cost of installing a resin driveway is heavily dependent on the current state of the surface. To save you a very long story, we will say this: if you have a concrete, tarmac, or a slabbed driveway, resin will definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, be cheaper than block paving. However, if your driveway has no “base” (e.g. gravel driveways, old block paving, grass, etc), we can confidently say traditional block paving will be cheaper.

2. Material Cost

Resin driveways usually require fewer materials than block paving. Resin can be laid directly onto an existing surface, which reduces the need for extensive groundworks. However, paving will always require a lot of materials, which will inevitably increase the price. That being said, if there is no “existing surface” for the resin to be laid on, we must create a new base with permeable tarmac, which would increase the price of resin.

3. Maintenance Cost

Resin driveways are famous for their low maintenance costs – they don't get weeds, oil stains, or fading, which means they require a small amount of upkeep. Block paving requires periodic sealing, professional cleaning, weeding, repair, and potential resurfacing, which will add to the maintenance costs.

4. Long-Term Durability

Resin and block paving are both durable options. A resin drive should last up to 20 years if taken care of. Block paving should last about 20 years also, but only if the maintenance is done frequently.

5. Aesthetics

In terms of style and design, resin driveways are more versatile, and the colour/pattern options are endless, which makes the product fully customisable. A paved drive can usually be done in different styles and designs, but not nearly as many. This comes down to personal preference rather than cost.

All things considered, the cost of a resin driveway will be less expensive if you currently have a concrete, tarmac, or slabbed driveway, seeing as this saves a lot of groundworks. Although, the cost of a block paving driveway will be much less if the project must be started from scratch (i.e. there is currently no base for the driveway), seeing as the groundworks required to complete a resin driveway from scratch are very substantial.

The topic of money always comes up when considering driveway choices. The cost of a resin driveway is usually somewhat more than that of asphalt or bare concrete. However, the cost of resin driveways needs to be weighed against the material's longer lifespan and lower maintenance needs.

Certain performance criteria can be used to gauge how effective water management solutions are. Remarkable water permeability rates are attained by high-quality resin systems that use permeable aggregates; they can normally handle 850–1000 litres per square metre per hour.

Resin's design versatility has transformed driveway aesthetics by opening up previously unthinkable pattern options. The outside appearance of your property will have rhythm and movement thanks to the emphasis points created by circular resin patterns, which also break up the monotony of standard rectangular driveways
